Diameter and Circumference

FACT: A maple tree should be approximately 8 inches in diameter to be tapped. Diameter is the measure from opposite edges across the middle of the trunk.

The sugarmaker can’t cut down the trees to measure 8 inches of diameter because he would have no new trees growing in his sugarbush. The sugarmaker does know that there is a relationship between the circumference, the distance around the trunk of the maple tree and the diameter.

FACT: Circumference is the measure around the trunk of the tree. The circumference is roughly 3 times the diameter.

  1. If the maple tree has a circumference of 18 inches, what is the diameter?
  2. If the maple tree has a circumference of 24 inches, what is the diameter?
  3. If the maple tree has a circumference of 36 inches, what is the diameter?
